ADHD Awareness Month Day 15

October is ADHD Awareness Month – an international movement to educate the public and create greater awareness and understanding about attention deficit disorder.

The ADHD Awareness Month Coalition has put together a rich array of resources to use in getting the word out. These include a press kit, posters, fact sheets, a calendar listing 31 ways to spread the word… and more!

I am determined to help spread the word – and you can spread the word too!

Here’s an idea from the ADHD Awareness Month Coalition’s calendar.

ADHD AWARENESS DAY ACTIVITY 15

Like movies? There are a number of interesting and informative films about ADHD. Pick one and arrange a screening at a local school, community center or library!

Here are some titles to consider:

Odd Kid Out – from Wordshop Productions:

In this deeply personal film, director-producer Karen O”Donnell provides an intimate account of three families, including her own, with an ADHD child, as they deal with the scope of pervasive interruptions and frustrations ADHD brings to daily life. Should we medicate? How can we better teach ADHD kids? Why does society continued to discriminate against those who are “differently wired” rather than embrace those with this uniquely creative gift? By breaking the code of silence, the documentary educates viewers through engaging narratives and explores innovative solutions to making ADHD the badge of ingenuity it truly represents.

A Mind Like Mine – from Wordshop Productions:

An educational documentary film chronicling a year in the life of two adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This deeply personal film features the filmmaker’s son along with another young man. Seven years after documenting their lives as children with ADD/ADHD, for the film, Odd Kid Out, O’Donnell turns the lens back to document their growth as young adults. The film takes a powerful twist taking the filmmaker by surprise causing her to refocus her original intent.

ADD and Loving It?! – from Totally ADD:

ADD & Loving It?! is a ground-breaking blend of humour, hope, and science that dispels the myths about a controversial disorder – Adult Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Comedian Patrick McKenna seeks a diagnosis for Adult ADHD and learns the facts from an impressive array of experts (some of whom have ADHD themselves!) including medical researchers, psychiatrists, psychologists, professors, and award-winning authors. Along the way Patrick reveals how his life as a husband and father are affected by ADD and even shares candid moments as he and his wife Janis work on the steps toward his diagnosis.

Real Life ADHD – from Chris Dendy and Alex Zeigler:

This compelling video for children and teens will grab their attention while simultaneously educating them about their ADD or ADHD. Produced by the popular authors, Alex Zeigler and Chris Abney Zeigler Dendy, the DVD features advice from the real experts–30 young people from 12 states ranging in age from 12 to 21. Speaking from their own personal experiences, these youth provide up-to-date scientific facts plus advice on six ADHD challenges. The DVD is hosted by two adult ADHDers: Alex and his high school friend, Lewis Alston, a popular Atlanta Radio DJ/VJ.
